Celebrate the Christmas Season with Christmas-themed Books
While my kids were growing up, we always read Christmas books to them.
Unpacking the Christmas decorations is somewhat like an early Christmas as we become reacquainted with objects unseen for a year: a mechanical cowboy Santa that sings “Jingle Bells,” videos such as The Santa Clause, and a stack of Christmas-themed books. Even a few years ago, my then-teenage children excitedly grabbed their childhood favorites and sat down to read their old friends.
Most of our small collection is written from a biblical point of view, but a few are secular. My son always enjoyed Mooseltoe. This picture book tells the tale of a dad moose who did everything to prepare for Christmas but forgot the tree.
I’m fond of the books by Oregon author Helen Haidle because I interviewed her for an author profile for the Christian Library Journal in 1997. When she learned I was pregnant in 1998, she sent me a few of her books as a baby gift.
The Candymaker’s Gift: The Legend of the Candy Cane. Helen Haidle’s husband, a professional artist, painted beautiful illustrations for this book.
Candy Cane Christmas. Same story as above but written for younger children. See my review on the catalog page (scroll down).
The First Christmas Tree: A Legend from Long Ago. Also illustrated by David Haidle and their daughter, Elizabeth Haidle. See my review on the catalog page (scroll down).
Let me know if you see a title you'd like to read this month.
Have a Merry Christmas as you celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world.
